Global Android DevCamp Hackathon: San Francisco

- Compete for Local Prizes as well as Global Prizes! (i.e. Google TV, Cash, or SmartWatch)
- Create an Android App in three days!
- Learn from International Google API Experts!
Please join us on February 17-19 for a Android hackathon in San Francisco.

  • Build with Us or Build Your Own
    • Throughout the weekend, we will be building a complete Android application and sharing the code with you so you can code along with us. If, on the other hand, you already have a great idea for what to build, bring that idea with you to the hackathon. Even better, bring along anything you can prepare ahead of time (sketches, designs, webpage mockups, etc.) and use the time and information provided to develop your idea into a working application, then share it with the world.
    • At the end of the day on Sunday, we'll invite you to share your Android application with the group and Global DevCamp Community.
  • What Do I Need?
    • We will provide facilities, power, refreshments, and experts to help you learn to use Google Api's and write your application. Just bring your laptop, ideas, and enthusiasm to complete the mix. (optional:  monitor cable)
  • When and Where?
    • The GTUGsf Android DevCamp Hackathon 2012 will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (2/18, 2/19) It will be held in San Francisco.

Is the venue sleeping-bag approved? Also, would the 5th and Mission garage be the best place to park?

Hey Conrad (aka Professor)! What can we students do to prepare our laptops for this DevCamp? For example, it seems we could install some software on our laptops? The Android SDK, some version of the JAVA SDK, and some version of Eclipse.

Personally, I prefer IntelliJ for general Java work. Would IntelliJ be acceptable for this class? It is supposed to work for Android development and integrate with the Android SDK, but I have never used that feature.

Hi! Is this event appropriate for beginners who have some Java programming experience, but are new to android/mobile apps?

I unfortunately do not have an Android device. Does anyone know if it is possible to simply purchase a device without a carrier and still do deployments to the device to test? I suppose 3g wouldn't work, but wouldn't WIFI?

Ron, you can write your application on the Android Emulator.

@Faraz, You are correct, I wasn't clear. I was curious if anyone knew if it is possible to purchase and test on a device without being tied to a carrier. Hope that clarifies.

It is highly suggested that you follow all the steps at http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-wo... either for Eclipse or IntelliJ, get your AVD working, futz with the code, and get some sort of VCS running if you're in a team. Seriously, if not the whole first day will be burned on this kinda junk.

If you'd like to develop Android apps with JavaScript and HTML, check out PhoneGap and AppLaud. See http://www.mobiledevelopersolutions.com/ Also, Libby just put up a new getting started video on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT02ytSSMII&feature=re...

Are there any more details on this meetup yet? Syllabus? Agenda?
Will the development be in MTML5/CSS or java?
I'd like to know these things before showing up.
    Thanks.

@Dan, We are licensing two training "kiosks" from Lynda to supplement the global sessions. There are several incredible trainings that we can use. One specifically covers the Android SDK.

@Conrad - I don't know what you mean by "Training kiosks". Can you just list all the sessions and tracks?

I also sent you an email direct. Please take a look and get back to me. Thanks.
